Behind the Books: How Library Collections Are Built

How does a library decide what to buy?

In celebration of Canadian Library Month, join us for a behind-the-scenes conversation about how library collections take shape.

From books and ebooks to journals, databases, streaming media, and other research resources, building a library collection involves far more than purchasing individual titles. Every year, librarians and collection specialists make thousands of decisions to support teaching, learning, and research across the university.

Hear from colleagues in Collection Services and liaison librarians as they discuss how collection decisions are made, how community needs shape priorities, how access to resources is negotiated and maintained, and how libraries balance growing demands with finite budgets. Along the way, we'll shine a light on the often invisible work that makes library collections possible.

Whether you're a student, faculty member, staff member, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, bring your questions, bring your lunch, and discover how collections are built, managed, and sustained at a major research library.
