The Future is Open: Becoming an Open Researcher
Heard about open access, open data, open science but not sure where to start? How can one become an ‘open’ researcher by design? This 90-minute workshop will review how to be an open researcher throughout the entire research cycle.
Topics covered include:
Data management practices:
-Documentation for reproducibility and reuse
-Open license options for research data
-Persistent identifiers for research data
-Publishing sensitive/proprietary research data
Open access publishing:
-Preprints
-Article processing charges
-Open access repositories
-Grant-agency open access requirement
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Define terms: preprint, open access repository, persistent identifier, FAIR, open data
- Describe both green and gold open access options
- Describe the advantages/disadvantages of preprint servers, open access repositories, README files, and data citations
- State the open access and data requirements of grant agencies
- Identify open licenses relevant for research data
- Recognize the limitations of openness for sensitive data
