Introduction to acquiring data from the internet with R - CDSI Workshop

Instructor: Tim Elrick, Faculty Lecturer in the Faculty of Science.

 

Overview: The internet is full of data that you can use for your analysis. As part of our data life cycle series, we will introduce you to efficiently retrieve data from the internet. We will look into downloading files, using APIs, web-scraping, and downloading feeds.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to
   > use an API
   > understand ethical web-scraping (i.e. how to download data from a website)
   > understand how to work with RSS feeds

 

Prerequisites:
      · Introductory knowledge of R, e.g. from McGill's R summer camp, or equivalent.
      · You need to bring your own laptop for this workshop. Install R and RStudio on your computer. You can find installation instructions here. Please contact us (cdsi.science at mcgill.ca) if you are having trouble with installation.
