SUMMARY:Repair as Culture: Why Newer is not Always Better
DESCRIPTION:Science for the People Canada is joining us for Science
Literacy Week 2023!\n\nThe dependence on personal devices such as phones
and laptops to manage our everyday lives has reached an all time high\, we
process so much information on a daily basis that the convenience of
checking emails on a mobile device has become a necessity. Despite that\,
we seem to discard these devices nearly as easily as we pick them up\, no
longer pursuing repair or maintenance for these crucial parts of our
lives.\n\n\n\nThis trend has not come out of nowhere\, large manufacturers
thrive on the constant discarding and purchase of newer technologies. And
as landfills across the world start piling up with more and more e-waste\,
it is necessary to have a conversation about how repair has fallen off as a
tool to reduce waste and prolong the lifetime of the things we
own.\n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we will go over the concept of repair\, both
in terms of technology and as a general idea. How repair can act as a way
to engage with the community and efforts worldwide to fight for the right
to repair. It will also include a few suggestions and tips on how to
integrate repair as part of your lifestyle and break out of the newness
cycle.\n\nTake a look at our Science Literacy Week calendar to find other
great events on campus beginning September 18.
