Enriching the Osler Vision:
The Osler Library of the History of Medicine Endowed Librarianship
In 2029, the Osler Library of the History of Medicine will celebrate its 100th anniversary. From an original gift from Sir William Osler of nearly 8,000 volumes, the Osler Library now boasts over 100,000 titles, hundreds of medical artifacts, half a kilometer of archival material, 2,500 prints, and is recognized as one of the top history of medicine repositories in the world.
The Osler Library of the History of Medicine is thus a living library continuously evolving from William Osler’s initial donation of 8000 books to becoming one of the world’s most prominent research libraries focused on the history of health sciences and medical humanities. The library continues to fulfill Osler’s mission sponsoring a vibrant array of activities, including travel fellowships for researchers from around the world, an artist residency program and important exhibits.
Funding is required to preserve, renew, and propel Osler’s intended legacy of focusing on medical student and researcher commitment to the medical humanities. A new exciting proposal has been approved by the Board of Curators of the Osler Library along with the McGill Libraries to develop a $4 million initiative entitled: The Osler Library of the History of Medicine Librarian Endowment.
The endowment will provide new and flexible resources to support emerging library programs while the endowed title confers prestige on both the Osler Library and its holder. It will also enhance the Osler’s global reputation as a hub of scholarly learning. The endowed position reflects the changing times in the professional world, where “information is power”.
Please join us on September 24 at 5:00 p.m. to learn about this important initiative. We look forward to seeing you.
