This exhibition looks beyond the measured drawing – floor plans, elevations, and sections – to explore what lesser considered archival materials in architectural collections tell us about architects, their practice, and architectural education. The displayed items represent work from ten fonds: John Bland, Sigrun Bülow-Hübe, Peter Collins, A.T. Galt Durnford, Arthur Erickson, R. Buckminster Fuller, Hugh McLennan, Moshe Safdie, and Hugh Valentine. Some individuals only appear in their role as student, practitioner, or educator; for others, they appear in multiple roles, such as student-practitioner, or educator-practitioner.

What emerges from this exploration is a more complete record of work at McGill University, a better understanding of the relationships and connections between students, educators, and practitioners, and a deeper appreciation of the importance of architectural archives. Each display case focuses on a specific relationship or connection -- the juxtaposition of students and practitioners; the relationships between architecture professors and students; the synergy between architecture education and practice; and the connection between students and educators during Expo ’67.

Presenting these moments through student notes and work, class guides, project reports as well as sketches, maps, and photographs, the exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on the individual items as well as their place within the larger context of architecture and architectural history.

Tout sauf le plan: ce que les archives révèlent sur l’architecte en tant qu’étudiant, enseignant et practicien.

Cette exposition va au-delà des relevés d’architecture (plans d’étage, élévations et coupes) pour explorer ce que les documents moins connus des archives architecturales nous apprennent sur les architectes, leur travail et leur formation. Les pièces exposées proviennent de dix fonds, ceux des architectes John Bland, Sigrun Bülow-Hübe, Peter Collins, A.T. Galt Durnford, Arthur Erickson, R. Buckminster Fuller, Hugh McLennan, Moshe Safdie et Hugh Valentine. Certains d’entre eux ne figurent dans l’exposition qu’à titre d’étudiant, de praticien ou d’enseignant, d’autres à plusieurs titres, par exemple étudiant-praticien ou enseignant-praticien.

Cette exploration permet de dresser un tableau plus complet du travail effectué à l’Université McGill, de mieux comprendre les relations entre les étudiants, les enseignants et les praticiens, et d’apprécier davantage l’importance des archives architecturales. Chaque vitrine met l’accent sur une relation particulière : les liens entre étudiants et praticiens, les relations entre les professeurs d’architecture et leurs étudiants, la synergie entre la formation et la pratique en architecture et le lien entre étudiants et enseignants pendant l’Expo 67.

En présentant ces moments à travers des notes et des travaux d’étudiants, des manuels de cours, des rapports de projet, ainsi que des croquis, des cartes et des photographies, l’exposition invite l’observatrice et l’observateur à réfléchir à chacun de ces éléments dans le contexte plus large de l’architecture et de son histoire.
