The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada is the only national competition for top achievements in book design and book production. The winning books are exhibited in a travelling show hosted by Canadian libraries and cultural organisations across the country. They are exhibited at the Frankfurt Bookfair and the Leipzig Bookfair and entered in the Siftung Buchkunst’s international book design competition "Best Book Design from all over the World" held in Germany.

The first Alcuin book design competition was held in 1981. It encourages Canadian publishers to pay closer attention to material qualities of book design in all of its aspects: from binding and paper quality to choice of type and illustration, to excellence in printing. The McGill Libraries are proud to partner with the Alcuin Society located in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the goal of promoting a wider appreciation of beautifully produced books in Canada.

Les Prix d'excellence en conception de livres au Canada de la Alcuin Society constituent le seul concours national récompensant les réalisations exceptionnelles en design et en production de livres. Les ouvrages primés font partie d'une exposition itinérante présentée dans des bibliothèques et des organismes culturels à travers le pays. Ils sont également exposés à la Foire du livre de Francfort et à celle de Leipzig, et soumis au concours international « Best Book Design from all over the World » organisé par la Stiftung Buchkunst en Allemagne.

Le tout premier concours de design de livres de la Alcuin Society a eu lieu en 1981. Il vise à encourager les éditeurs canadiens à accorder une attention particulière aux qualités matérielles du livre sous tous ses aspects : de la reliure et la qualité du papier au choix de la typographie et des illustrations, en passant par l’excellence de l’impression. Les Bibliothèques de McGill sont fières de s’associer à la Alcuin Society, située à Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique, afin de promouvoir une plus grande appréciation des livres magnifiquement réalisés au Canada.
