Not sure what you're allowed to use, or getting different answers from different professors? Generative AI tools are useful for some tasks, unreliable for others, and already built into software you use without noticing. This fast 30-minute session covers what they're good at, where they fail, how to check their output, and how their use is governed at McGill. Come whether you use them every day or avoid them entirely. Bring questions for an optional Q&A afterwards. 

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to: 

• Explain how generative AI tools produce text, and evaluate their output by verifying claims and citations against library sources 
• Judge which tasks these tools are and aren't suited to, recognize where AI is already built into the tools you use, and decide when to use, limit, or decline them 
• Locate the expectations governing AI use in your own courses, and identify what you shouldn't share with these tools, including other people's personal information and library-licensed readings
