Various book covers for Poetry of Montreal exhibit

Exhibit | The Poetry of Montréal: Selections from Rare Books and Special Collections

Location: McLennan Library Building, 4th floor lobby, (3459 McTavish Street, Montreal, Quebec H3A 0C9). Accessible during opening hours.

Throughout the 20th century, Montreal was home to many poets whose work earned both national and international recognition. The rich tradition of poetic expression in Montreal is reflected in the activities, interests, and innovations of notable literary movements and groups (including L’École littéraire de Montréal, the Montreal Group, the Vehicule Poets), important cultural and literary magazines (such as First Statement, Preview, Les écrits), and publishing houses (for instance Éditions de l’Hexagone, Éditions d’Orphée, Éditions Erta, Vehicule Press).

Rare Books and Special Collections holds archival materials related to Montreal poets, as well as four significant Canadian literary collections that are particularly strong in published poetry: the Louis Dudek Collection, the F.R. Scott Library, the Ralph Gustafson Collection of Canadian Poetry, and the John and Myrna Metcalf Collection. Drawn from our holdings, the material on display brings together a selection of published poetry collections as well as posters that extend beyond the printed page. These posters were featured in the 1979 Poésie en mouvement/Poetry on the Buses project highlighting the work of poets connected to Montreal in the 20th century. The contrast between the two primary formats on display celebrates poetry’s dual nature as an art form that can be both experienced privately and shared collectively.

Display prepared by Ursula Carmichael with assistance from Eve Majzels, Octavian Sopt, Rayyan Mounib, and Kienan Macdonald.
