SUMMARY:Exhibit | Small But Mighty: Postcards through the 20th century
DESCRIPTION:Postcards are disarming. In the contemporary popular 
 imagination\, postcards are a perennial fixture in gift shops serving as 
 souvenirs and sentimental message-bearers. Though small\, with little room 
 for text and image\, postcards can be potent artifacts rich with layered 
 and complex meanings shaped by their context of production and 
 reception.\n\n\nLong overlooked in scholarship\, researchers began 
 “rediscovering” postcards in the 1980s as a tool for critically 
 examining modern events since the late 19th century. As both visual and 
 textual artifacts\, they offer insights into the personal\, political\, 
 artistic\, and commercial worlds of the publisher\, sender\, and recipient. 
 In their golden age\, postcards formed a kind of social network\, 
 reflecting the range\, complexity\, and brutalities of the human experience 
 through text and image.\n\n\nCultural institutions all over the world house 
 sizeable postcard collections. Rare Books and Special Collections at McGill 
 University Libraries holds over 18\,000 postcards\, primarily from the 20 
 century. This exhibition draws from that collection to explore the wide 
 array of subjects and meanings that can be conveyed in a small\, ephemeral 
 format. Featuring over 100 postcards\, created by known and unknown artists 
 and publishers\, visitors can explore significant historical\, cultural\, 
 and economic themes and events of the 20 century through the “postcard

 impact : les cartes postales à travers le xxe siècle\n\nLes cartes 
 postales sont désarmantes. Dans l’imaginaire populaire contemporain\, 
 elles sont des cadeaux\, des véhicules\npour les messages sentimentaux\, 
 et un élément incontournable des boutiques de souvenirs. Même si elles 
 n’offrent que peu d’espace pour le texte et l’image\, les cartes 
 postales peuvent être des artefacts importants\, aux significations 
 complexes et multiples\, façonnés par leur contexte de production et de 
 réception.\n\nLongtemps négligées par les chercheurs\, les cartes 
 postales ont été « redécouvertes » dans les années 1980 comme des 
 outils permettant d’examiner de manière critique les événements qui se 
 sont déroulés depuis la fin du xixe siècle. En tant qu’artefacts 
 visuels et textuels\, elles offrent un aperçu des univers personnels\, 
 politiques\, artistiques et commerciaux des\npersonnes qui la créent\, 
 l’envoient et la reçoivent. À leur apogée\, les cartes postales 
 formaient une sorte de réseau social : leur texte et leur image 
 reflétaient la diversité\, la complexité et les brutalités de 
 l’expérience humaine.\n\nUne nouvelle exposition prend cette collection 
 comme point de départ pour explorer le large éventail de sujets et de 
 significations qui peuvent être véhiculés par un petit objet 
 éphémère. À travers le prisme de plus de 100 cartes 
 postales\,\ncréées par des artistes et des éditeurs connus et inconnus\, 
 les visiteuses et visiteurs peuvent explorer des thèmes et 
 des\névénements historiques\, culturels et économiques importants du xxe
